Matariki Whanau Day

Jump Jam was in the hall.  We were able to watch the Jump Jam DVD and learn new Jump Jam routines as we followed the movements on the screen.

Our pavement art depicted the story of Matariki or some of the legends that we had been listening to.  Here the moon and the Seven Stars are being drawn.

A range of tabloid activities were included.  The students rotated around the activities.  Whanau leaders guided students in the activities.

Here the students are listening to Maori legends

We ended the second term with a Matariki Whanau Day.  Matariki is the Maori New Year.  We had been talking about Matariki and its significance to Maori in the past.  We have listened to stories and researched our information.
June and July are the months of Matariki.  It begins when the Stars of the Seven Sisters rise into sight.  A number of Maori legends give different accounts of how it came into being.  If the stars were bright then it would be a good year for crops.  If they were dull then crops were left a little longer before they were planted.

Matariki traditionally was a time to remember those that were no longer with them.  It was a time of learning of culture.  It was a time to feast with family and friends.  The crops were harvested and the foods from hunting had been preserved.  It was a time to fly kites so that they would reach close to the skies.
We celebrated our Whanau afternoon by listening to Maori legends, producing pavement art about the stars and the legends that we listened to, taking part in tabloid sports and by doing Jump Jam.

Sportstacking at BBPS.

Sportstacking is becoming a craze at BBPS. Room 4 took part in a Guinness Book of Records attempt on the 13th November for the most people sportstacking in multiple locations around the world at one time. Lots of students have had a go at sportstacking now and many are getting very fast. The world record for the Cycle Stack is 6.9seconds. At the moment the fastest person in Room 4 is Metoyer who is able to do the Cycle Stack in 17 seconds.
A pamphlet about sportstacking will be going home this week. If you want to order a set of sportstack cups you will need to bring your order form back to school and give it to Mrs Mac.
Here are some photos from our record attempt.

Room 5 Electricity Assembly

The Bengal Tigers reading group prepared and performed an amazing and electrical performance about their learning. The boys dressed up as Vector workmen and acted out the actions as is they were putting a wire in the ground. A special thankyou needs to be made to Cameron's Dad, Mark who let us borrow the hard hats and uniforms from Vector.
The boys moved to the music by Eddy Grant, Electric Avenue.
Mrs Bodley thought the performance was awesome. Well done, boys.

Weather Poetry

Winter Wonderland

Howling winds,
Shadowy clouds
Exploding snow and hail.

People made of snow guard the roadside,
Skidding cars on ice.
School closed.

Sledding on the ice.
Sledding down the steps,
Having an excellent time.

Star shapes falling from the sky,
Cars crawl at slow speed.

Skiing competitions,
Bob-sledding around corners,
People chucking balls of snow.

Winter wonderland.

Weather Poetry

Stormy Storm

Clouds gathering - very black,
Wind's already up to 120.
House's windows getting battered,
Doors slamming closed.
Thunder booming, wind is howling.
Kids screaming like mad.
Parents fists are clenched,
Their patience is wearing thin.
Waiting for the storm to end.

Room 3's Olympic Personification Poems

New Zealand Flag
A personification poem by Olivia.

Launching yourself from the athlete's hand.
Twirling side to side, while being held by our
New Zealand Olympic Superstar.
Rising up to the tallest pole, as my athlete receives
her gold medal.
Proud to be part of New Zealand.

Running Shoes
A personification poem by Natasha.

I'm staring at the white line,
zooming at the speed of light.
I'm cautiously taking each step with pride,
Cutting the track.
Sweat trickling down,
I'm nearing the end.
Leaping to a halt,
Proudly wearing gold.

Shot Put
A personification poem by Logan.

Launching myself from the thrower's hand,
soaring and swerving through the air.
Sinking slowly,
then thudding and splintering to the ground.

A Famous Light
A personification poem by Alice.

I'm a newly lit flame, on a famous torch.
Flickering madly with excitement,
I'm dancing to the beat of the cheering crowd,
Flying up to the sparkling stars.
Blazing like an everlasting bonfire,
Am I ready?
Yes, I'm ready, ready for the opening of the games.

Cycling
A personification poem by Adam.

You zoom out of the starting blocks like a heat missile,
Your wheels spin fast and steady as they smoke with lightening speed,
You're breaking world records thinking of GOLD! GOLD! GOLD! all the way.
Final lap approaches as you hear the last lap bell,
Approaching the finish and thinking my goal is broken,
Is this VICTORY! you smell.

Chess Team at Our Lady Star of the Sea

On Friday 1st of August, a group of committed chess players represented our school to play with some of the top players from other local schools.

This tournament is in its seventh year and the games will be played as a round robin over the coming Friday lunch times. The team of four players travelled to Our Lady Star of the Sea for the first game and unfortunately we lost all our games (however we gained experience!)

Thanks to Mrs Howell for being a wonderful photographer, driver and supporter!

Safe From Mother Nature

The stormy clouds congregate into one dark gloomy cloud.

Once again , yellow strikes reappear in the sky where you can't see.

Once people hear the signal, that's when they flee inside.

The rain is inpatient, smashing on the door trying to enter the house.

Doors shut, so no entry for the rain and I am snuggled inside.

Safe.

Storm Poetry

Thunder and Lightning
by Kai Heng

Thunder sparks,
BOOM! BOOM!! BOOM!!!

Rain and hail knocks on the door.
God suddenly growls in anger.
Grim clouds explode as loud as bombs,
Howling leaves and windows shake.
Family dinners disturbed by flickering lights.

BOOM!BOOM!!BOOM!!!

Blinding Sky

By Tyler

Blinding dark sky up above.

People scampering indoors
To take shelter.
Lightning charging across the sky.
Thunder smashing objects like a fist.
But I'm safe.

Senior CHOIR

The Senior Choir is made up of 47 Year 5 and 6 students.
Currently the choir is learning over 12 different songs for a combined schools concert later in the year.
Five local schools are all learning these songs as well as an individuals school choir item per school.
These photos show the choir in practice on the last day of term.
Children were allowed to wear 'street clothes' [mufti] as a reward for a very busy, active and successful term.

ST JOHN visited to teach us about FIRST AID

The whole school enjoyed learning about different aspects of first aid.
Room 2 especially enjoyed practising to phone the 111 operator and giving information and receiving instructions.
In groups of three or four we had turns being the patient, the first aider and the 111 operator.
Taking instructions over the phone and following them correctly to put the 'unconscious patient' on their side [recovery position] was also a valuable lesson.
The fake blood and hand bandaging session was great also and learning how to think and speak clearly in an emergency was important.
Jacob, Rhiannon and Kelvin thoroughly enjoyed being volunteers and acting out specific parts, and Dylan sounded very confident and professional in his thanking Ms Hyland on behalf of everyone.
Thank you again to the St John Ambulance instructors who came to school.
